We saw a bull moose over the weekend in the fall foliage around Oxbow Bend. Additionally, there was a group of three moose near the park entrance at Moose Junction. A bull, cow, and juvenile.

Spent yesterday in the Tetons. There were two black bears near the north end of the road from Teton Village to Moose Junction that apparently are fighting a bit over territory. The larger one actually chased the slightly less large one up a tree at one point. Here is a bear picture and a Teton view from Bradley Lake.

For something different, we visited Redfish Lake in the Sawtooths. Lots of nice little campgrounds, mountain vistas, and lake views.

For the fish in Big Springs, it must seem like fish heaven. After swimming up stream as far as they can go, they reach a point where people, instead of trying to catch and eat them, feed them pellets and bread from a bridge all day long.

Big Springs

We camped at Big Springs campground, outside of Yellowstone (22 miles) this past weekend. This small campground was much nicer than what we experienced at Bridge Bay last weekend. It's convenient to the park, fairly secluded and LOTS of wildlife. We saw four moose, including two bulls. Fish are visible in the springs, but no fishing is allowed. Birds included blue herons, osprey, and various waterfowl. The area is supposed to have a significant population of Great Gray Owls, which we did not see, but I may have heard one nearby in the early morning.

Saw a heron along the river, west of the road along Gibbon Meadows. It quickly flew off as I approached, so I got the best shot I could as it departed.

Grand Prismatic Spring

We climbed the ridge just south of Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday. We saw others going to a lower elevation viewing point west of our location. I'm sure it was a great view there, but the higher you go the brighter the colors and better the perspective. Although the vast majority of Yellowstone visitors never see this sight, in my opinion it's the most impressive thing to see in the park.

Our RV at Bridge Bay

We camped at Bridge Bay over the weekend. We don't recommend loops A or B, unless you want to be close to the marina. The RV is 33 years old and decided to leak multiple fluids, most notably power steering fluid. Manual steering was exciting. We don't recommend the mechanic services at Fishing Bridge, unless you want nothing done.

Tower Fall

Just a quick pic of Tower Fall. All the other waterfalls in the park are called "falls" - plural. I wonder why this one is singular.

Swan in Madison River

We've seen this swan on multiple occasions this year in the Madison River near the eagle sitings. Spectacular bird!

Bull Elk

These two bull elk were found peacefully grazing and drinking from a fresh stream off the Gibbon River just south of the Norris Campground. It was a beautiful sight!

Bald Eagle

The signs for the Bald Eagle Management Area on the west entrance road along the Madison River were blank over the weekend. I'm not sure if that was temporary, but the eagles were not around the nest. We did spot one nearby, along the Madison River.

Grizzly Sow With Cubs

As of yesterday, there was a grizzly sow with two cubs in the meadow about 100-150 yards east of the road about half way between Dunraven Pass and Tower Junction. She apparently has been there fairly consistently. Park rangers are present to make sure people don't get too close (and ensure all four wheels of every parked vehicle are 100% off the road). We saw the sow and both cubs, but getting good shots takes patience. We never saw all three with heads up at the same time. Last year the bears in this area disappeared in August as the food supply was depleted, so they may not be in this area long. We also saw a black bear just north of Tower Junction.

We enjoyed our first RV trip into GTNP last weekend. The views are awesome. Watch out though, a black bear has been harrassing campsites at Signal Mtn campground.

Mystic Falls is a quick, easy hike in the western thermal areas. It's worth the confrontation with the mosquitos.

one-antler moose

We encountered a young bull moose with a single antler on the Moose-Wilson road from Teton Village to Moose Junction. Of all the potential moose-viewing areas, this spot seems the most likely bet for morning shots. Prime moose habitat is to the east of the road, which means dealing with the sun and shadowing is an issue in the morning.

First Spring Visit

We went in the west entrance Saturday, May 15, along the Madison River, up to Norris and over to Canyon. A swan was in the river just west of the Bald Eagle Management Area, both coming and going. As usual, an eagle was near the nest, and we saw a blue heron in the river - harder to spot than the huge swan. Bison are very abundant in the western part of the park. Snow is still common around Canyon and to the north. So bison and elk are quite prevalent along the Madison and Gibbon Rivers where the snow is mostly melted.

The Spring season in Yellowstone has begun. Roads from the north and west entrances have opened to automobile traffic for parts of the park including Norris, Madison, Canyon, and Old Faithful. The entrance fee is also waived for National Park Week (April 17-25). More information at http://www.nps.gov/yell/conditions.htm.
